The History of Xenogears

Grahf, seeker of power......

Diablo -- (Spanish) "devil"; sorcery derived from the devil, or the active worship/practice of such.

We all know that there wasn't much information about this period of history in the game. The Diabolos Invasion occured directly after the Nisan-Solaris war, perhaps a few years after -- but the major reason this war was so destructive was the emergence of Omnigears, and creatures/machines (perhaps the beings that would later become the Pillars of Deus as well?) that could match or surpass their strength. Nobody knows where these beings came from, but they ravaged the earth -- and Solaris -- for quite a number of years.

Here, I'd like to place a guess and say that these things came from Zohar, or some part of Deus that was dormant. Grahf started this war, choosing no favorites (ie: he went after Solaris, the surface, and Shevat), with the aim of destroying everything to end the cycle he and Elly were trapped in. Somewhere around here Lacan's original body died, and he began 'possessing' the bodies of others to extend his life.

It's also pretty safe to assume that the Omnigears from all sides eventually ended this war. Solaris apparently withdrew at this time, as did Shevat, to rebuild and revise their strategies, leaving the surface world relatively peaceful for a time. It wouldn't last, of course, but between the end of the Diabolos Invasion and the beginning of the Elru conflict and Id's emergence, nothing much happened to occasion comment in the game.

Historical Parallels......

Don't ask me. ^_~ There have been so many dictators and such bent on destroying the world in our history that I doubt you could find one war that matches this one -- at least, not well enough to say Square was thinking of -whatever-it-might-be- when they wrote this game.

However, mythology often carries the answer when actual history does not. Every ancient country has a legend involving some god or larger-than-life villain who tries to destroy the world as everyone knows it. You could consider the evil god Seth (Egyptian pantheon) a partial parallel to this part of Xenogears's history.

Well, like the parallels for the Nisan war, this will take some in depth studying. Feel free to donate, or else just wait until I find something useful. ^_~
