Curse of the times...
The Zeboim civilization existed about four thousand years before the game, and compared to current times, humanity had reached an amazing level of advancement, perhaps even surpassing that of Solaris. But much like our own reality, the world was racked by wars and disasters, and general disharmony among humanity. The greatest monuments to that era that still exist in Fei's time are the Mass Driver facilities. From there, nuclear and biological weapons were launched, and despite the worlds great level of advancement, mankind began to die out as earth "declared" humans unfit for living (or so Kim implicates). | Genetic damage due to radiation poinoning and disease was a major problem. A huge percentage of the population was unable to reproduce, and the average life-expectancy was about thirty years of age. There were people who tried to negotiate the world out of war, but they failed. Doctors and scientists attempted to remedy the growing genetic defects sweeping through the world, but without dependable power and safety, they also failed. Crime was on the rise, and terrorism was a common occurance in almost every city, state, and country in the world. At this time, Miang appeared on the scene, set on reviving Deus. She held a position of power under the Prime Minister, manipulating the world behind the scenes -- and although she generally doesn't seem like a kind, caring person (after all, Elly is the Mother!) she probably tried to stop the wars. With humanity killing itself off, she had nothing to work with, and no power to bring Deus back without human aid. At this time, a young idealist by the name of Kim Kasim appeared. He was a brilliant scientist, specializing in nanotechnology, and led a somewhat happy life with his wife, Elly. He did his part in the clinics, helping sick soldiers and terrorist victims, but he eventually got fed up with the entire situation, and used DNA from both his own body and Elly's to create a nanomachine colony in the form of a child. Emeralda was born -- Kim's angel of salvation. (More information on Fei, Elly, and Emeralda is available at "Fei and Elly - the Beginning".) As far as the end of the Zeboim Era is concerned, either the game did not reveal anything else, or I just don't remember at the moment. But soon I'll have another source of information that might help clear this up, so until then, this is it. ^_~
Real-world Parallels...... |
I would think, just by looking at all of the information Square has given us, that the Zeboim Era was based on present-day Earth. If that's right...... Well, just look at the statements they're making. Urban blight, rising crime, terrorist attacks...... Obviously, humanity was killing itself off in Xenogears. Hmm, could that have any bearing on reality? |
Look at the problems between the UN (I think) and the Middle East. Biological and nuclear weapons were at the source, and still are as far as I know. The plan to drastically reduce the number of existing nuclear weapons on the planet isn't working very well, either. ^^ Hopefully we won't end up stuck in an all-out war such as was portrayed in Xenogears, but if you look closely, the implications are the same. It's kind of creepy, isn't it? ^_~ And we don't have Kim Kasim to save our butts if we do end up starting World War III. Perhaps Square left us a message, or a lesson to be learned...... (Or I'm reading too much into it for the sake of my webpage -- you decide. ^_~)
